I an headed to Santa Barbara tomorrow night for a conference, and I am hoping to meet our own HisStigness for lunch Thursday. After lunch, I head to Monterey to share dinner with an old friend who really knows wine, then court Friday morning. The weather has me concerned.

My biggest worry is the tires on my Infiniti are worn. I was hoping to stretch them another 1500 miles, but fresh wraps would make me feel safer in the rain I will be driving in (generally the Q70L is amazing in such conditions). I believe I may be getting tires today, even though cash is tight. Why take a chance?

I wish more people shared this mindset.

If you are asking the question the answer is probably yes.

Better let your mate pay for the wine and you get those tires. Sadly sometimes money is tight but you are always worth it..

Thinking Italian yet? I mean, they’re probably all made in Brazil anyways.

Get some Michelins, probably MXV4, or MXM4. Try to stay away from the Pilot AS3+s only because they’re really sporty and aren’t as comfortable as one of their luxury tires.

I’ll be in LA Thursday
Please buy new tires. I think Oppo, your family, and I know myself would rather you drive there safer than not. Especially with 6-8 inches in a 24 hour period predicted.

don’t forget that new tires are slippery for the first 50-100 miles, probably even more so on wet surfaces. be careful.

As someone who’s done a lot of stupid stuff in the rain (never with any traffic around except one time) and has somehow gotten away with it, get the tires and play it safe. That said, make sure to drive around to get that initial protective layer off the rubber when you get them on your car, preferably with some mild cornering involved.
I tailgated a semi once, in the Miata, during a hurricane downpour on an interstate in the late evening. I had to stay close behind because his tires displaced enough water that my car wouldn’t hydroplane. All because my tires were low on tread due to 100 mile DD use, autocrossing on weekends, and I was a cheap-wad. Not worth the gamble ever again.
